Clough: Broncos won’t win Super Bowl in 2017 with Lynch or Siemian

There’s a full slate of offseason workouts, the NFL Draft, and a month of training camp and preseason games left before the regular season, but as it stands right now the Denver Broncos won’t win a Super Bowl in 2017 with Paxton Lynch or Trevor Siemian, so says Sports Radio 104.3 The Fan’s Sandy Clough.

But, it’s not necessarily solely because Siemian or Lynch would be under center.

“Given all of those factors and that holes could conceivably be filled, weaknesses either camouflaged or strengthened between now and the opening game of the season, let me say this: The Broncos aren’t going to the Super Bowl with either Trevor Siemian or Paxton Lynch at quarterback in 2017,” Clough said.

Obviously, in the months to come leading up to Denver’s opener, variables could change, like finding a cornerstone left tackle.

But, Clough said he doesn’t see a “permanent solution” at the position anytime soon and “neither one at this stage seems skilled enough to overcome the weaknesses that are likely to exist generally on this team and specifically on the offensive side of the ball.”

And that’s why Denver had “at least some level of interest in Tony Romo” at various points, Clough said, because the now-retired Dallas Cowboys quarterback may have been more equipped to mask some of the Broncos’ offensive flaws.

“He could play around those people. He had the experience and the skill to play around people who weren’t quite as capable,” Clough said. “No guarantee that the Broncos would be a championship contending factor in 2017 with Romo, just that their chances would be better.”

But that’s “an academic exercise now,” Clough said, with Lynch or Siemian likely to start at least most, if not all, of the games in 2017.
