What was thought to be a momentary damper on an otherwise strong start to the regular season for the Colorado Rockies has turned into a more significant situation.
After initially believing Rockies pitcher Jon Gray had re-aggravated a previous toe injury, forcing an early exit Thursday against the San Francisco Giants, the club learned the Colorado ace has a stress fracture in his left foot and could miss significant time.

Colorado placed Gray on the 10-day disabled list Friday, recalling right-hander Shane Carle from Triple-A Albuquerque.
Gray suffered the injury in the second inning after leaping for a ball up the middle. He’d stay in the game, completing another of his three scoreless innings, but Gray would leave without recording an out in the fourth inning.
Left-hander Chris Rusin earned the win in relief of Gray, throwing. 3 1/2 innings while giving up just 1 run to down the Giants and perennial Cy Yong candidate Madison Bumgarner.
Also headed for the sidelines, the Rockies placed outfielder Gerardo Parra on the paternity list Friday. He’s likely to miss a handful of games.
The club recalled outfielder Raimel Tapia from Triple-A Albuquerque as well, filling in for Parra.
