Momentum for a promising young season for the Colorado Rockies hit a road bump in San Francisco on Thursday when ace right-hander Jon Gray hobbled off the mound after re-aggravating a toe injury.
Gray had thrown three scoreless innings against the Giants, giving up just one hit, before exiting with no outs in the bottom of the 4th.
Just two innings prior, Gray landed directly on his left toe, the same as he had previously injured in spring training, after jumping up while attempting to field a chopper.
“It flared back up, and as the game went on he got through the next inning. But after that, it was just too much discomfort for him to continue,” manager Bud Black said after the game.
Gray, who has yet to earn his first win of the season for the Rockies in three starts, had x-rays taken on his foot Thursday night, per the Denver Post’s Nick Groke, and had an examination scheduled for Friday.

After the game, Gray said he thinks he’ll just “rest and stay off it,” which he said worked before, but he was unsure if he’d miss his next start.
“I’ll be going off how I feel, but in the past, it’s felt pretty good day-to-day. So, I’m just going to rest as much as I can and hope for the best,” Gray said.
Despite the quick exit from its ace and perennial Cy Young Award candidate Madison Bumgarner on the bump, the Rockies managed to piece together a close win to kick off the three-game series.
In relief of Gray, Chris Rusin earned the win, throwing 3.1 innings and giving up just 1 earned run.
The bullpen lineup of Adam Ottavino, Mike Dunn, and Greg Holland shut the door on the remaining 2.2 innings, giving Colorado a 3-1 win on the road.
