Klis: Doubtful Broncos make run at Jamaal Charles, Adrian Peterson

For those fans clamoring for the Denver Broncos to make a big-time splash in free agency, the club has ample opportunity to do so after Tuesday.

The Minnesota Vikings chose to not pick up the option on five-time All-Pro and former MVP Adrian Peterson for next season.

Meanwhile, AFC West foes the Kansas City Chiefs released two-time All-Pro and four-time Pro Bowl running back Jamaal Charles.

So, with these perennially potent rushers hitting the free agency market for the first time in their careers, the Broncos should make a run at either Charles or Peterson, right?

Mike Klis, 9News Broncos Insider, says not quite.

Joining 104.3 The Fan’s Brandon Stokley on Tuesday, Klis said he’d be surprised if the Broncos made a move for either one of the ageing running backs.

“The Broncos have too many other needs, I would think, to make that big of a splash at running back,” Klis said.

Klis said, though the thought of Peterson or Charles is somewhat enticing, Denver’s not really in a position to go after either of the big-name backs.

The Broncos still have $3 million guaranteed to C.J. Anderson this year, Klis said, and the team drafted Devontae Booker in the fourth round of last year’s NFL Draft.

Not to mention, all indications point to a strong draft class again this year at the running back position, which Klis said he believes Denver could pick from.

“So, maybe the Broncos can get themselves one. That would make more sense,” Klis said. “But if they went with one of the veterans, Adrian Peterson and maybe you spell C.J. Anderson, who hasn’t held up for a full season yet, and you work in Devontae Booker. Maybe. I doubt it, though.”

Klis said because of Peterson’s history of bouncing back from injury, and “bouncing back and playing at a high level,” he’s more inclined to think the team would look at him.

Charles, however, is a speed guy trying to recovery from more severe injuries, Klis said, and wouldn’t even make his radar.

“When a speed back gets up there in age, buyer beware,” Klis said.
