Could Mark Schlereth be the answer at Broncos offensive line coach?

On Thursday morning, “Schlereth and Evans” co-host Mark Schlereth offered up during his “Clear the Air” segment that the Denver Broncos most important hire may not be the head coach but rather offensive line coach.

Schlereth, who played guard for the Broncos from 1995 to 2000, said the biggest problem area for Denver in 2016 was that offensive line — ranking 27th in rushing yards (1,484) and 24th in sacks given up (40).

“The biggest hire, in my mind, is who’s going to coach this offensive line. Who’s going to get this group up to snuff because you can’t five-fifths of this offensive line? You’ve got to be able to get production out of that group, so that group plays exceptionally well and gives us a chance to win another championship next season,” Schlereth said.

However, “The Drive” co-host DMac and Alfred Williams said perhaps Schlereth should look in the mirror to answer his own question.

“Mark Schlereth should absolutely, 100 percent, be the offensive line coach for the Denver Broncos. I have no doubt in my mind that he would be a much better option than what’s there right now,” Williams said.

However, 9News Broncos Insider Mike Klis said he thinks the odds of something like that, Schlereth being offered Denver’s offensive line coaching job, aren’t great, especially considering many former players don’t realize the hours coaches put in, but that “you never know.”

“Obviously he knows his stuff, and I think he would communicate well with players. I think he’s good on technique. And stranger things have happened,” Klis said.

But Schlereth, who joined “The Drive” later in the afternoon, said that he understands the rigors of being an NFL coach, and that he would “absolutely” consider an offer if the price were right.

“If John Elway calls me, are you kidding me? Of course, I would take that meeting,” Schlereth said. “Now, one of the problems I would get into I don’t want to take a pay cut. And I do pretty well for myself. So that would be a conversation that we would have to have, but, one, I certainly would consider it.”

And it’s not the first time Schlereth’s name has legitimately come up in conversation about coaching in the NFL, with the latest offer coming from a general manager just this week.

“I’ve been offered three coaching jobs since I retired, NFL coaching jobs. I was just offered a job. A general manager just reached out to me a week ago about coaching his offensive line. Several NFL teams have reached out to me about doing exactly that,” Schlereth said.
