Broncos want coach who will build around young quarterbacks

As the search for Gary Kubiak’s replacement commences, the Denver Broncos will look to fill the position with a coach and staff that can continue to develop its young quarterback Trevor Siemian and Paxton Lynch.

In his end of the season press conference on Monday, Broncos general manager John Elway said he was “excited” about his young quarterbacks, which was a point of offseason stress in 2016.

“I think we’re in a much better position now than we were maybe not at the end of last year when Brock (Osweiler) left and went to Houston,” Elway said. “I’m excited about that position. Last year it was the biggest concern. This year it is not.”

And Elway said Denver’s head coach search will focus, at least in part, on finding a coach who has a history of developing young quarterbacks.

“I think with the two young guys there is no question that it going to be a topic of conversation of, ‘OK, how do we get these two players better.’ For me, and having played the game, I know how important the relationship is to have with the quarterback,” Elway said. “With the quarterback as well as have the players have a relationship with the coaches.”

Elway also tabled the idea of going after a veteran quarterback in the offseason, saying the front office always looks at everything in terms of personnel but that the team was excited to build around Lynch and Siemian.

We have to get better around them; there’s no question. We’ll start that process as soon as we get a head coach. The key thing is for us to get better as a football team and make the most of the time.”

In his first season of significant play, Siemian finished with 18 touchdowns and 10 interceptions, throwing 289 of 486 passes (59.5 percent) for 3,401 yards.

Lynch saw action in three games this season, starting two in relief of an injured Siemian, throwing for 497 yards on 49-of-83 passing (59 percent), 2 touchdowns, and 1 interception.
