Report: Gary Kubiak stepping down as Broncos head coach

Just two years after returning to Denver with one goal in mine — winning a Super Bowl— and a year removed from delivering on that promise, Gary Kubiak is stepping down as the Broncos head coach.

ESPN NFL Insider Adam Schefter reports that multiple sources have told him that, with his family concerned about his health, Kubiak will part ways with the organization.

Sunday’s game at home against the Oakland Raiders will be Kubiak’s final game, as the Broncos were eliminated from playoff contention by the Kansas City Chiefs on Christmas Day.

Kubiak was hospitalized after his team’s 23-16 loss to the Atlanta Falcons on Oct. 9 after “experiencing flu-like symptoms,” according to a statement from the Broncos, and was later diagnosed with a “complex migraine condition.”

He’d miss the team’s following matchup, a Thursday Night Football game in San Diego, but returned to action the following week.

The health scare harkened back to another incident in November 2013 when Kubiak, then the head coach of the Houston Texans, suffered a mini-stroke while running off the field at halftime.

Again, Kubiak returned to the sidelines in relatively short order, missing just one week. He was dismissed later that the season.

During his introductory press conference in January 2015, Kubiak called that episode a “scary time” for him.

“I probably ran myself into the ground a little bit. I think I learned a lot from that. I’m doing great, I’m feeling fine. Hopefully, I look OK. But I’m doing fine, I worked through that,” Kubiak said at the time.

On Friday, when asked about his desire to continue coaching, a non-committal Kubiak said:

“I love this league. I love the Broncos. I love to work. I’m all in on the Raiders right now. There will be time for reflection and all of that stuff next week, but right now it’s time to focus on what we’re doing.”
