Broncos DC Phillips released from hospital after sideline collision

UPDATE: Denver Broncos defensive coordinator Wade Phillips has been released from an area hospital after taking a scary hit on the sidelines from San Diego Chargers running back Melvin Gordon.

Patrick Smyth, Broncos vice president of public relations, said Phillips underwent precautionary tests, everything came back normal, and the defensive play caller was cleared to head back to work Monday.

After the game, head coach Gary Kubiak said Phillips, who gestured to fans with a wave of his figure as he left the field on a cart, was “fine” and “upbeat.”

“He talked to me before he left the field, so we were just being smart. All indications are that Wade is doing great, and he will be back quickly,” Kubiak said.

ORIGINAL: Denver Broncos defensive coordinator Wade Phillips was taken to a Denver-area hospital after a San Diego Chargers player collided with him on the sideline during Sunday’s matchup at Sports Authority Field at Mile High.

Phillips left the field on a stretcher after being knocked to the ground on a play that ended with an interception return for a touchdown by Broncos cornerback Bradley Roby late 2:46 left in the second half.

According to the club, Phillips had movement in all extremities and was alert while heading to the hospital for further evaluation.

The scary incident comes just three weeks after Broncos head coach Gary Kubiak was taken by ambulance from the stadium after suffering what was later diagnosed as a complex migraine.

Phillips also took a blast a year ago during the Broncos AFC playoff matchup with the Pittsburgh Steelers.
