Klis on Broncos: ‘This isn’t the 2015 defense anymore’

There’s plenty of blame to throw around, and things to work on, after the Denver Broncos 21-13 loss on the road against the San Diego Chargers — the offensive line, running game, etc.

However, 9News Insider Mike Klis told Sports Radio 104.3 The Fan’s Sandy Clough Friday that perhaps the most surprising revelation out of Thursday’s loss was Denver’s defensive drop off from 2015.

This isn’t the 2015 defense anymore,” Klis said. “This is two-straight games against veteran quarterbacks who know what they’re doing: Matt Ryan and Philip Rivers. And they know what to do against the pass rush. We also got the blueprint where teams are going to neutralize the Broncos pass rush with the quick, short throws.”

Klis pointed to the trend that the Broncos keep allowing first quarter drives go for points, along with not getting off the field quickly.

This team, and it’s happened all year, it just has been biting them the last five, six days, is the fact that the defense not only do they give up a touchdown on the game’s opening drive but these drives take 7 or 8 minutes,” Klis said.

“I mean, you can kind of feel the air go out of the Broncos balloon before offense takes a snap.”

Through six games this season, Denver’s allowed 41 points and scored just 13. And in terms of first quarter time of possess, the Broncos mustered just 38:25 of a possible 90 minutes thus far.
