Siemian: DeCamillis did ‘heck of a job’ as Broncos interim coach

It’s hard enough for a coach to turn around after a tough home loss and get a team prepared to play on the road, against a tough divisional rival, on Thursday Night Football.

Now, imagine that while also being an interim head coach filling in for the leader of a team who won a Super Bowl the previous season.

By his own admission, Denver Broncos special teams coordinator Joe DeCamillis, the man tapped to fill in for head coach Gary Kubiak as he recovers from a complex migraine suffered on Sunday, said his team’s 21-13 loss “obviously didn’t go as well as it should have.”

“I just wish we could have got a win for the city, got a win for the organization. I’m sick to my stomach. It’s sickening,” DeCamillis said after the game. “I hate to lose man, that’s all. That’s a bunch of warriors out there fighting and I wish we could have done more to help.”

But after the game, quarterback Trevor Siemain was effusive in his praise of DeCamillis and the job he did in preparing the Broncos in Kubiak’s absence.

“I thought he handled an obviously tough situation as good as he could, and he was the same guy he’s been ever since I’ve known him,” Siemian said. “I know a lot of guys appreciated that. He did a heck of a job I think.”

DeCamillis, who’s been a coach in the NFL for more than a quarter century, did say this week he’s had head coaching aspirations — he interviewed for the Chicago Bears opening previously.

But this week wasn’t about getting his shot, DeCamillis said earlier this week.

“I don’t really look as this opportunity as that, to be honest with you. I look at helping an organization and helping a friend and a coach. That’s what I’m doing. I’m going to try everything that I can to help this organization get through this little bump in the road, then we’ll go from there.”
