Browns pick up former Broncos punter Colquitt

It didn’t take long for Britton Colquitt to find a job. Just a few days after being released by the Denver Broncos, the seven-year pro has a new home punting for the Cleveland Browns.

Colquitt found himself on the way out of Denver on Tuesday as the Broncos went for the economical option in rookie Riley Dixon.

Dixon, the team’s seventh-round (228th overall) in this year’s NFL Draft, was brought in to compete with Colquitt for the starting roll this offseason.

Colquitt, who had a standout postseason despite a below average regular season, was set to make a base salary of $3.25 million in 2016.

According to 9News Broncos Insider Mike Klis, Colquitt was willing to take a $1 million pay cut this season after trimming $1.6 million from his $3 million 2015 salary.

Browns head coach Hue Jackson told the club’s website Saturday the team was excited to work with Colquitt.

“It’s great that we had the opportunity to add a quality veteran punter. Obviously we let a really good one go, but it’s tremendous that our personnel staff was able to quickly bring someone to our team who has had success in this league and has some skins on the wall,” Jackson said. “We’re excited about the opportunity to work with him.”

Colquitt reportedly had been on the trading block following the Broncos’ third preseason tilt with the Los Angeles Rams, wherein Dixon took all punt snaps and held on all field goal attempts, but was released Monday.

He left the Broncos as the franchise’s all-time leader in gross (45.2) and net (39.1) punting average.

Dixon is slated to make a base salary of $450,000 in 2016, according to Spotrac.com.
