Punter Britton Colquitt among 15 players cut by Broncos

Aug 30, 2016, 5:21 PM

Nearly a dozen players fell among the carnage of the Denver Broncos cuts Monday, and a handful more dropped today, but perhaps none more headline grabbing than punter Britton Colquitt.

The eight-year punter — and Denver’s longest-tenured player — was released among a handful of other roster moves to get the roster to 75 players by Tuesday’s 2 p.m. deadline.

Bralon Addison, wide receiver, and Kyle Roberts, tackle, were both waived Tuesday while veteran tight end Garrett Graham was played on injured reserve.

The team also waived 10 players and released one on Monday.

He finishes as the franchise’s all-time leader in gross punt average (45.2) and net putting average (39.1) while netting 149 kicks placed within the 20-yard line and 29 touchbacks on 472 punts.Colquitt, who signed with the team as a college free agent in 2009, was the longest tenured player on Denver’s roster.

The veteran will be replaced by rookie Riley Dixon, the Broncos’ seventh-round pick in this year’s NFL draft.

Colquitt, who had a standout postseason punting despite a below average regular season, was set to make a base salary of $3.25 million in 2016.

According to 9News Broncos Insider Mike Klis, Colquitt was willing to take a $1 million pay cut this season after trimming $1.6 million from his $3 million 2015 salary.

Colquitt reportedly had been on the trading block following Saturday night’s preseason tilt with the Los Angeles Rams, wherein Dixon took all punt snaps and held on all field goal attempts.

Coming out of Syracuse, the Ray Guy Award semifinalist (given to the nation’s top punter) was brought in as competition for Colquitt this offseason.

Through three preseason games, Dixon’s punted 13 times for a net average of 41.2 yards and 4 downed inside the 20-yard line.
