It’s official now, as part of the Russell Wilson trade, the Denver Broncos are sending the No. 5 pick in this spring’s NFL Draft to the Seattle Seahawks.
The Broncos acquired:
Quarterback Russell Wilson
2022 fourth-round pick (defensive lineman Eyioma Uwazurike)
FOR
Quarterback Drew Lock
Defensive lineman Shelby Harris
Tight end Noah Fant
2022 first-round pick (offensive lineman Charles Cross)
2022 second-round pick (defensive lineman Boye Mafe)
2023 first-round pick (No. 5)
2023 second-round pick (No. 37)
Seattle will likely have the opportunity to draft a star player and possibly a quarterback. Some may have though Drew Lock would be the Seahawks quarterback of the future going back to Seattle in this deal. But Geno Smith won the job and played well. Meaning the Seahawks may not even use their premium pick on a gunslinger. Right now Kentucky QB Will Levis is mocked to the Pacific Northwest.
The Seahawks could’ve made the playoffs on Sunday with a win and a Green Bay loss but they’re still waiting on the Packers to play on Sunday Night Football.
The Broncos will get a first-round draft pick this year still, thanks to the Bradley Chubb trade. That pick, via San Francisco, is provisionally at No. 29 in the draft.
Wilson of course struggled mightily in his first season in Denver, making many Broncos fans want this trade back. Given what Seattle could select in the spring, the level of regret may rise even further.
The pick could’ve been even better but thanks to Broncos 31-28 win on Sunday, the selection send out is slightly less embarrassing. If Denver had lost in Week 18, the pick would’ve been No. 3
