Russell Wilson fires back at Pete Carroll over wristband comments

Nov 9, 2022, 12:40 PM

The never-ending Russell Wilson divorce from Seattle continues to generate headlines from shade thrown one way or the other, months after the blockbuster trade that sent the superstar quarterback to Denver.

This time Wilson’s clapping back at his old coach Pete Carroll. The leader of the Seahawks said on 104.3 The Fan’s sister station Seattle Sports, that he attributes some of quarterback Geno Smith’s success to using a play-calling wristband.

“If you notice, Geno’s going off the wristband, and that’s a big help,” Carroll said. “It’s smoothed things out, sped things up, cleaned things up. And that’s part of it, too. We never did that before. There was resistance to that, so we didn’t do that before.”

Carroll didn’t specify who the resistance was from, but given Wilson was there for the last 10 seasons, it seems like a relatively easy conclusion to guess that the comment may be about Russ.

“When Shane says something to Geno, he’s not doubting it. He’s just going with it, so there’s a real immediate flow, and that accelerates all the process,” Carroll said.

The Denver media asked Wilson about these comments on Wednesday.

“I won a lot of games there without wearing a wristband,” Wilson said. ” I didn’t know winning or losing mattered if you wore a wristband or not.”

Wilson’s Broncos have been one of the worst-scoring teams in the NFL, while the Seahawks, stewarded by Smith, have been of the league’s pleasant surprises. The future Hall of Fame quarterback’s struggles have led to even more noise about the trade and has made some in Broncos Country turn on their new QB1.

“I do whatever it takes to make sure that we’re rolling and moving and everything else,” Wilson said. “Of the few times I wore the wristband, it depended on the game plan, what we get called, and all that stuff.”

Wilson has been called out by more of his former teammates than he’s scored touchdowns since the trade.
