After horribly disappointing loss, Broncos QB Russell Wilson takes blame

Broncos QB Russell Wilson knows he cost Denver a game on Thursday night.

After a deeply disappointing 12-9 overtime loss to the Colts, all eyes in Broncos Country are on Wilson and head coach Nathaniel Hackett. The duo has been a failure thus far, with Denver’s anemic offense the laughingstock of the NFL.

Wilson had two horrendous interceptions against Indy and still had a chance to win. On fourth-and-one on what turned out to be the game’s final play, he threw an incomplete pass in the end zone and Denver dropped to 2-3 on the season.

The Denver defense was once again stellar, but the QB that GM George Paton gave up so much for in a trade and then gave so much money to wasn’t good enough. In his postgame press conference, Wilson owned this one.

“At the end of the day, I’ve got to be better. I’ve got to play better. This defense played their butts off tonight,” Wilson said. “We were third-and-long too much… And at the end of the day, throwing two interceptions can’t happen. It can’t happen. I let the team down tonight.”

Wilson’s picks were both awful, but the second one to try to seal the game was particularly bad. Facing third-and-four, just outside of the two-minute warning, he tried to hit little used WR Tyrie Cleveland in the end zone. The pass was picked off and Matt Ryan led the Colts down the field for a game-tying field goal.

Wilson would go on to mention a second time in his press conference that he “let the team down,” while also trying to stay positive. It was a mix of accountability, but attempting to be a leader based on his past experiences.

“The good thing is, one thing I know about myself, is I’m going to respond. I don’t know any other way. I always believe in myself, I always believe in this team,” Wilson said. “When you play this game the one thing you got to know is you go through adversity. I’m always going to choose that adversity is just temporary, and you can overcome the obstacles. It starts with me, I’ll make sure I do that.”

Again, it’s nice to hear Wilson take responsibility for the loss. But at this point, fans don’t really care. The results simply need to be better on the field. The first five games haven’t been close to what anyone expected.
