Russell Wilson readying for ‘monumental moment,’ Broncos home debut

Sep 14, 2022, 2:33 PM

Nationally, everyone was set for Russell Wilson’s return to Seattle and who would come out on top in the revenge war.

Locally, folks are just as excited to watch their new franchise quarterback play at Empower Field at Mile High for the first time. The hype hasn’t cooled to see Wilson, despite the opening-night loss. Coloradans are just amped for the Denver Broncos to be back and led by a superstar quarterback.

He’s thrilled for his debut too, which will happen Sunday against the Texans.

“I’m super excited to play here at home. I got that experience a bit, with the home energy during the preseason and running out for the first time, but this is going to be a monumental moment,” Wilson said. “These fans, I was stunned to see how many fans were able to travel to the game up in Seattle. It was just tons of orange in the crowd and just how loud it was, and it was really special crowd there. And so to come here, and to play at home, it’s going to be really special. I can’t wait.”

Wilson’s applause were far outdone by the villain’s jeers he got from the 12th Man. But the hero’s welcome will come from his new hometown faithful in Week 2. And he hasn’t truly had that moment yet since he didn’t suit up in the preseason.

“They got a great team in Houston, they look really good on film, and they just had a great game that they should have won,” Wilson said. “Lovie Smith is a tremendous football coach. I got to play them last year. They do some really special things. There are some really great players, so we got to be ready.”

The Texans began the season with a tie to the Colts. Last season Wilson’s Seahawks beat the Texans 33-13 in a battle of sub-.500 teams.

“I’m always encouraged and never discouraged; we always want to win; that’s what I play the game for, Wilson said. “What I saw from our team was our ability for us to respond in the midst of adversity midst of the game. We had the chance to win the game. And I believe, you know, one, number one in myself, but two, I believe in this football team, what we can do.”
