Antonio Senzatela left yesterday’s start in a heap of pain, after his leg gave out while trying to cover first base on a groundball.

The Colorado Rockies announced today that the right-hander was down due to a torn ACL in his left knee. This spells the end of Senzatela’s sixth season in the big leagues; he made 19 starts with a 3-7 record and 5.07 ERA. It was the second-worst season so far by the 27-year-old, who has been an above-average MLB starter.

But the injury will also impact Senzatela’s seventh season. Most baseball players take at least nine months to return from an ACL repair surgery, which would target his return around Memorial Day next year. According to a study, those who returned within nine months had a 40% chance to re-injure themselves, while those who waited for longer than nine months reduced that risk to 19%.

The Rockies activated Jhoulys Chacín from the 15-day Injured List in a corresponding move while they shelved Senzatela.

Senzatela signed a five-year deal worth upward of $50 million last fall.
