Rockies unveil new alternate jerseys, introduce green into color scheme

The Colorado Rockies released their City Connect jerseys on Thursday.

The jerseys look like Colorado license plates. We believe they are the second team in MLB history to wear green pants, the Oakland A’s have also worn green pants.

The uniforms are certainly Colorful Colorado, which was the plan.

The green jerseys are topped by white mountain peaks and outlined in purple.

The Rockies will debut the uniforms in game on Saturday, June 4 against the Atlanta Braves.

“We wanted it to be a classic look, a Colorado look and there were other ideas bounced out there and about, going a little more wild or crazier than this, but we thought this would appeal not only to our younger fans and the younger generations, but we thought it would appeal to our older fan base,” Rockies vice president Jim Kellogg told ESPN. “It’s classic, it’s clean and that’s what people think of Denver and Colorado when they enjoy a ballgame.

If you think about the state and city, you know how beautiful it is with the lakes and the snow,” Kellogg said. “There is the history of downtown Denver and Union Station. There were a lot of concepts and colors that we could have pulled from, but this was the right fit.

The purple jersey is really iconic for our club,” Kellogg said. “The purple pinstripes is a classic part of our identity since we started in 1993. We like where it’s at right now and I think this additional uniform is going to play well within the set of what we have.”

In releasing these uniforms, it is by far the biggest deviation from the norm the club has ever taken. Since expanding to Colorado in 1993, the Rockies have never changed their logo and their uniforms have remained largely the same.

Their biggest adjustment came last decade when the Rockies slightly tweaked the color purple they considered to be their primary color. It made their alternate purple jerseys look less navy.  The Rockies did add purple pinstripes on their road uniforms before ditching them. And Colorado did have a love affair with vests, adding a few different ones before settling long-term on black, as cemented as the iconic Rocktober look.

Those black vests are now gone, making way for these new City Connect uniforms.

City Connect has been a way for MLB and Nike to go buck wild with uniforms. The Chicago Cubs have one that honors Wrigleyville, while the Chicago White rep the Southside. The Boston Red Sox ditched the navy and red for blue and gold that represent its city flag but more looks like a UCLA baseball jersey. Miami, Washington, Arizona, Houston, San Francisco, Kansas City and Los Angeles also have City Connect jerseys.
