Red Sox fans are already booing Trevor Story after his bad start to the year

Maybe the grass isn’t always greener?

Former Rockies shortstop Trevor Story is finding that out the hard way. Beloved in Colorado, Story is already learning what it’s like to play baseball in a harsher market. His career with the Boston Red Sox is off to a feeble start, as Story is hitting just .210 with zero home runs.

Story went 0-4 on Thursday afternoon against the Angels with four strikeouts, bringing his total on the year to 21. He’s managed that many strike outs in just 67 at bats. Story also has two errors as he makes the transition to second base, one of which cost the Red Sox a game.

Boston is just 10-16 on the season and in last place in the American League East. Things reached a boiling point on Thursday after Story’s fourth strikeout and his team getting embarrassed in an 8-0 loss. The boo birds came out at Fenway Park.

Yikes. Life comes at you fast.

Story was always a much better Coors Field hitter than on the road, and Rockies fans loved him just as much if not more than guys like Nolan Arenado and DJ LeMahieu. He didn’t have to leave, but apparently wanted to be on a “winner” and is now paying the price for that decision. The Rockies tried to bring Story back with a generous offer, but he said no.

Instead, Story is playing in Boston on a six-year, $140 million deal that already looks like it was a big mistake by the Red Sox. We’re barely a month in, and his own fans are booing him off the field. Story’s numbers at Fenway Park, especially against right handed pitchers, are truly terrible.

Meanwhile, the Rockies are 15-10 and currently in a Wild Card position in the National League. Story would have been welcomed back with open arms and continued to put up huge numbers at 20th and Blake. Instead, he’s stuck in Boston, playing for a last place team with fans that aren’t thrilled he’s there.

At least he has a bank account stuffed full of money as a consolation prize? He could have had that in Colorado too.
