Broncos CEO Joe Ellis “lobbying as hard as we can” to play Jaguars in London

The Denver Broncos haven’t played in London since 2010.

It remains their lone regular season game outside of the United States — a 24-16 loss to the San Francisco 49ers. The game is infamous in Broncos Country because former head coach Josh McDaniels ordered a 49ers practice to be filmed by the team’s video operations director. He and the Broncos were eventually fined $50,000 each for the infraction.

If it’s up to President and CEO Joe Ellis, the team will return in 2022, this time without the cheating and hopefully returning home with a win.

“I know coach (Nathaniel) Hackett and (GM) George (Paton) would be open to the possibility of playing in London. There’s some games in London this year, I’d love to see us,” Ellis told media members on Monday at the NFL’s annual meetings. “We play the Jaguars, we’ll see if that becomes a possibility. I don’t know right now for sure. I’ve expressed interest on behalf of the team. Coach Hackett is bullish on it. George is bullish on it. Russell Wilson is bullish on it, so we’re lobbying as hard as we can.”

The Broncos are scheduled to play the Jaguars “on the road” this season, but Jacksonville will once again host a home game in London. It seems like a perfect fit for the Broncos to go back across the pond.

Ellis also confirmed on Monday the Broncos will be sold soon, so his services will no longer be needed. It’d be cool if on his way out the door one of Ellis’ final moves was to get the Broncos another international game.
