On Sunday, George Paton said the process of finding Vic Fangio’s replacement would get started quickly. It didn’t take long for him to make good on his word.
Today, it was revealed that the Broncos have asked for permission to interview five candidates. The list includes:
1. Eric Bieniemy – Offensive coordinator, Kansas City Chiefs
2. Nathaniel Hackett – Offensive coordinator, Green Bay Packers
3. Jerod Mayo – Linebackers coach, New England Patriots
4. Kellen Moore – Offensive coordinator, Dallas Cowboys
5. Dan Quinn – Defensive coordinator, Dallas Cowboys
All but Hackett are coaching in playoff games this weekend, so their interviews won’t happen this week. The Packers have a bye, so Hackett could interview this week if he and the Broncos choose to move forward, giving the Green Bay OC the first shot at the job.
During recent searches, the Broncos list of candidates has sometimes been underwhelming. The vast majority never went on to become head coaches with another team, a sign that Denver wasn’t talking to the best of the best.
But this group appears to be different. All five of the candidates currently on the Broncos wish list will be in high demand with every team facing a head-coach opening.
