Schefter gives Broncos Country glimmer of Rodgers hope

Jul 20, 2021, 7:58 AM

As the tea leaves point more and more toward Aaron Rodgers returning to the Green Bay Packers this upcoming season, ESPN NFL Insider Adam Schefter provided Broncos Country with a glimmer of hope about landing the reigning MVP.

Early Tuesday, Schefter reported that the Packers had offered Rodgers a two-year extension that would’ve kept him in Green Bay for five more season and made him the highest-paid player in football.

But Rodgers declined the offer, Schefter tweeted, who added that it’s “proof that it’s not about the money.”

According to OverTheCap.com founder Jason Fitzgerald, an extension of such magnitude would be worth more than $45 million a year.

Rodgers is slated to make a base salary of $14.7 million in 2021 and $25 million in both 2022 and 2023. With bonuses, the Packers star’s cap figure would be $37.2 million this season, $39.85 million in 2022 and $28.35 million in 2023.

Schefter’s latest wrinkle in the Rodgers-Packers saga comes on the heels of seemingly conflicting reports between the ESPN insider and his NFL Network counterpart Ian Rapoport, which Brandon Stokley said Monday was indicative of how the whole situation has played out:
