New Broncos general manager George Paton proved over the last few days he wants to give head coach Vic Fangio every chance to win.
First, he picked up the option on Von Miller, even though he eats up $18 million against the cap. Paton wants to give Fangio two great edge rushers — Miller and Bradley Chubb.
Defensive end Shelby Harris said over the weekend he thinks opponents should be afraid of the pass rush they can put together, something that didn’t happen the past two years because of injuries.
“We have too much talent to keep falling short,” Harris said in a press conference last week. “Having the guys back and adding pieces, we’re going to take that next step.”
Paton really tipped his hand in favor of Fangio when he reached a one-year agreement with former Chicago Bear cornerback Kyle Fuller and he wasted no time doing it.
The Bears put him on the waiver wire and within hours the Broncos reached a one-year, $9.5 million deal.
Now, the Broncos have Fuller and Ronald Darby, who Denver signed last week on a three-year, $30 million deal. Pair those two cornerbacks with Bryce Callahan and the Broncos may be near the top of the league for quality corners.
The Fuller agreement also makes life a little easier for Paton.
When I didn’t my first mock draft, I had the Broncos taking a cornerback, Patrick Surtain or Caleb Farley. We found out that Farley going to need a surgical procedure that will prevent him from working out later this week.
Paton can simply take the best player available with Denver’s first-round pick.
The defense is so much stronger with the additions of Darby and Fuller and the returns of Miller and Harris.
The next move is to find a quarterback to compete against Drew Lock.
