Clayton: Patience gives the Broncos a leg up in race for Deshaun Watson

As it stands right now, it still looks like Drew Lock will be the starting quarterback for the Denver Broncos. But the team is still in a good position if anything happens with Deshaun Watson. Why? They’re able to be patient because they have Lock.
Things aren’t going to happen quickly with Watson. The Texans are insisting they’re not going to trade their quarterback, but everything I hear from Watson’s people is that he wants out and he’s not going to be there at all this year if necessary. Is he going to turn down $39 million per year? Is he just going to walk away from it? Maybe not. But he’s going to continue to put the pressure on.
Other teams and quarterbacks are in motion. Indianapolis needed to make a move and was able to get Carson Wentz. With someone like Sam Darnold, a decision is probably going to be closer to the draft because the Jets need time to scout all of the quarterbacks available before they make a move. As for San Francisco, we’ll see if they’ll be able to do much. Washington is going to be in the mix as well.
The two teams I see with a good chance to do something for Watson are Denver and Carolina. The Panthers don’t seem to be too enamored with Teddy Bridgewater. They made him available in an offer for Matthew Stafford and now Bridgewater has removed the team from his social media.
Overall, the great thing going for the Broncos is that this situation is going to take patience. And they can be patient as long as they have Lock, who they’re going to keep while they wait to see what happens with Watson.
