Should Broncos target receiving option for Flacco with No. 10 pick?

Among the offseason needs for the Denver Broncos in 2019 is a pass-catching weapon for newly-acquired quarterback Joe Flacco, with that potentially coming in the form of a tight end.

But despite the Broncos re-signing tight end Jeff Heuerman to a two-year, $9 million deal late last week, “The Drive” co-host DMac said he’ll likely transition into more of a blocking than a pass-catching role.

“It’s not going to be about catching passes for Heuerman,” DMac said. “Now, who’s your real tight end? That’s a little tricky.”

DMac said if the Broncos are looking to the NFL Draft to fill that need, they might have to “wait until next year.” But he did offer up another solution for a receiving weapon for Flacco.

“I’m going to give you the next-best solution for Joe Flacco. The guy that they should draft at No. 10 — this is me talking, not Elway — is D.K. Metcalf,” DMac said.

Metcalf, a wide receiver prospect out of Mississippi, dazzled at the NFL Scouting Combine a few ago, putting up measurables like a 4.33-second 40-yard dash and 27 reps on the bench press.

DMac’s co-host Monday, Zach Bye, called the idea ludicrous, that there’s a perfectly fine tight end prospect the Broncos could take at No. 10 in T.J. Hockenson.

“This dude is going to be dropped into an NFL offense and be their Travis Kelce. There is a reason that he has been mocked as going before the Broncos. He’s that much of a game-changer,” Bye said, adding a guy like him won’t be in next year’s draft.

However, DMac said the most unique player “by far” coming out in the NFL Draft is Metcalf.

“You say, well, who’s your slot receiver? OK, Emmanuel Sanders is your slot receiver. He really isn’t that outside guy anymore,” DMac said. “And they were having a hard time figuring out who the slot receiver guy’s going to be.

“So, now, when you want to push the ball down the field, when you really want to push the ball down the field, you’re going to have Courtland Sutton on one side, D.K. Metcalf on the other side, and Emmanuel Sanders in the slot.”
