Cautious optimism after Broncos start to 2019 offseason

While immediate reaction to the Denver Broncos first signings of the 2019 offseason seemed mixed, a wave of cautious optimism has surrounded the club’s move so far in free agency.

On Tuesday, “Stokley and Zach” co-host Brandon Stokley lauded Denver acquiring defensive back Kareem Jackson and right tackle Ja’Wuan James in free agency, calling them “huge upgrades” in key spots.

“In the grand scheme of things, they got two really good football players and addressed two big needs moving forward,” Stokley said. “And they helped their football team out right away.”

“Pritchard and Cecil” co-host Mike Pritchard said that while the Broncos moves weren’t necessarily “splash,” they were “solid.

“I think it’s been a solid free agent period right now, the frenzy period,” Pritchard said. “We’ll see what the Broncos can do with the second wave. But a solid start to the offseason for the Broncos.”

Stokley said that after Monday’s moves, he’s “a lot more optimistic” about the Broncos prospects in 2019, more so than even a week or two previous.

“Now all these guys got to go out there and do it. This is offseason talk. But, at the same time, I’m much more optimistic than what I was yesterday, a week before, two weeks before,” Stokley said. “Really good, solid football moves to improve your football team in 2019.”

Perhaps most important, Stokley said, signing a cornerback and right tackle to can start right away allows the Broncos to address the No. 10 pick in the draft with who they believe is the best player available.

“It frees you up in the draft now, frees you up more to take that best player available and not be pigeon-holed on certain positions,” Stokley said.
