Billick: Broncos defense under Fangio will be ‘best it’s ever been’

As the head coach of the 2000 Super Bowl champion Baltimore Ravens, Brian Billick likely knows a thing or two about legendary defenses.

So, when the NFL Network analyst told “Schlereth and Evans” on Wednesday that, under Vic Fangio, the Denver Broncos defense could be the organization’s best ever — better than the 2015 iteration that led the way to a Super Bowl 50 victory — it carries some weight.

“He’s a brilliant defensive coach. That defense, with no disrespect to what went on before, will be the best that it’s ever been with Vic Fangio heading it up,” Billick said.

However, “Stokley and Zach” co-host Brandon Stokley, who played Billick with the Ravens, said to “pump the brakes” with the talk about the current Broncos defense surpassing the 2015 unit.

“It will be the best that we’ve seen in a couple of years, I think is what he probably should have said,” Stokley said.

Stokley said the 2015 Broncos defense leave “big shoes to fill” and that, no matter who the coach is, “it’s not going to be the same as it was in 2015.”

“What that defense did is legendary. I think in the history of the NFL, you’ve only seen a few defenses be able to do something like that,” Stokley said. “And, certainly, the Broncos defense carried that football team to a Super Bowl championship.”
