Schefter: Gary Kubiak will not be Broncos offensive coordinator

UPDATE (4:54 p.m.): The Denver Broncos have been denied permission to interview San Francisco 49ers quarterbacks coach Rich Scangarello for its offensive coordinator position, according to ESPN NFL Insider Adam Schefter.

UPDATE (4:21 p.m.): The Denver Broncos will interview San Francisco 49ers quarterbacks coach Rich Scangarello for their offensive coordinator opening on Monday, per NFL Network’s Tom Pelissero.

Scangarello has served under 49ers head coach Kyle Shanahan for two seasons in San Francisco and one (2015) in Atlanta when Shanahan was the Falcons offensive coordinator.

Hold your horses. The Denver Broncos appear to not be getting the band back together after all.

Following much speculation that he’d assume the offensive coordinator role for the Broncos next season, Gary Kubiak will not be in that position, ESPN NFL Insider Adam Schefter told “Stokley and Zach” on Friday.

“The staff that we thought that was going to be in place is not going to be in place. Vic Fangio’s the head coach, but Gary Kubiak is not going to be the offensive coordinator,” Schefter said.

Schefter, who first broke the news, said that the two sides — Kubiak and the Broncos — had lengthy discussion but ended up on the different sides about staffing and offensive philosophies.

Per 9News’ Mike Klis, Elway had planned on a broader offensive role with the team for Kubiak alongside a younger, “college concept” offensive coordinator, but things didn’t work out when the two sides started talking about Kubiak returning to the coordinator role.

Klis also reports that Kubiak wanted to bring back assistants Rick Dennison and Brian Pariani, who had been let go by the team just two years prior, but the organization didn’t want them back.

In his introductory press conference on Thursday, Fangio called Kubiak a “hell of a coach,” though would not comment on who the team would bring in as assistant coaches until things were “ironed out and iron-clad.”

“He’s a guy that I have respected throughout my career in the NFL, having competed against him at several stops,” Fangio said. “If Gary is interested, then I’m interested.”

It’s unsure if Kubiak will remain with Broncos organization or if he’ll pursue a return to the sidelines with another team. He has been a senior personnel adviser in Denver’s front office virtually since stepping down as the team’s head coach following the 2016 season

“I think Gary loves Denver so much that it won’t surprise me if he’s a part of the organization and continues in a role that he had, but a lot of people talked about the fact that he would like to get back to coaching. I think that was the sense, expectation all along,” Schefter said. “But it doesn’t look like he’s going to be the offensive coordinator in Denver now.”

In his season-ending press conference earlier this month, general manager John Elway said he expected Kubiak to be a member of the organization next season, whether it’d be in a front office or coaching position.

“We’ll see what that role may be, but Gary will be around,” Elway said.
