Broncos run game can serve as defense vs. Chiefs high-powered attack

Through three games, the 3-0 Kansas City Chiefs lead the NFL in points (118) and rank highly among most offensive categories.
Second-year pro Patrick Mahomes leads the league in passing touchdowns (13) and passer rating (137.4) while ranking ninth in passing yards (896).
So, how does a Denver Broncos defense ranking in the middle of the NFL pack in most statistical categories stop a high-octane Chiefs offense?
Rush the ball.
“There’s a way the Denver Broncos can keep the Kansas City Chiefs offense in check, and that’s called running the ball,” said Cecil Lammey.
The “Pritchard and Cecil” co-host said on Wednesday the Broncos can use its rushing offense as a “defensive weapon” against Mahomes and the Chiefs powerful offense by keeping them “cold on the sidelines.”
“This Broncos team is very good at running the ball. I’ve highlighted that before. Now it’s time to use that ground game, and use it more than ever starting this week,” Lammey said. “Because if you can run the ball well, you’re going to keep Kansas City on the sidelines, and that’s an advantage for the Denver Broncos.”
“Stokley and Zach” co-host Brandon Stokley echoed a similar sentiment on Wednesday as well, saying the Broncos offense can “frustrate” the Chiefs by “milking the play clock” and “scoring touchdowns.”
“Make them feel the pressure,” Stokley said. “Make them panic a little bit.”
Through three games, the Broncos offense ranks third in the league in terms of rushing yards (434), behind only the San Francisco 49ers and Carolina Panthers. But Denver ranks 17th in terms of time of possession per game (30:39).
“Take all the time you can. Obviously, you’ve got to convert third downs. You’ve got to stay on the football and all of those things. But take your time,” Stokley said. “Keep them off the field. You have got to do a great job, Denver Broncos offense, this week if you want to win.
“It’s on the offense, not the defense. Apply the pressure. Keep them off the field.”
