Signing CB Jones may signify larger role for RB Lindsay with Broncos

Among the reasons Denver Broncos head coach Vance Joseph gave for bringing in cornerback Adam Jones was not only his experience as a defensive back but also as a returner.
“We thought having more experience at corner and having an experienced punt returner was a key factor for our football team — and it was one guy that fit the bill,” Joseph said Monday. “He solves two issues as one body.”
Joseph said Jones — who’s been returning punts in the NFL since before current Broncos punt returner Isaiah McKenzie was in high school — “brings proof” to the role.
“’Pacman’ Jones could probably roll out of bed in the middle of the night and catch a punt,” 104.3 The Fan’s Sandy Clough said Monday night.
But what else Jones’ skillset as a return may bring is not only a possible exit for McKenzie but also a bigger role for rookie running back Phillip Lindsay, Mike Pritchard argued on Tuesday.
“I really believe that this package that they have for Phillip Lindsay is going to grow,” Pritchard said. “They want him to have a bigger role because, to me, Phillip Lindsay on the field with three wide receivers, a tight end, whatever personnel package you want to put together, makes the Broncos really, really explosive — a different dimension.”
With Jones as a punt returner, the “Prichard and Cecil” co-host said Lindsay should have less on his plate, which is a good thing for a young player.
“I believe they’re going to expand that role for Phillip Lindsay, but at the same time, now by signing ‘Pacman,’ you don’t have to worry about him being your punt returner,” Pritchard said. “Now, take that off his plate.”
Through three preseason games, Lindsay has had 13 rushing attempts for 70 yards — 5.4 yards per play — along with four receptions for 58 yards and a touchdown through the air.
In the return game, Lindsay’s taken back three kicks and two punts for a combined 84 yards.
