Denver Broncos fans will have at least one thing to celebrate on Super Bowl weekend, as former safety Brian Dawkins has reportedly been inducted into the Pro Football Hall of Fame.
Dawkins will earn a gold jacket in just his second year of eligibility to become just the 13th member of the Hall of Fame at the safety position, and only the ninth to exclusively play the position.
Fellow safety and Broncos Ring of Famer John Lynch, however, fell short of the number of votes needed for enshrinement in his fifth chance.
A second-round pick in the 1996 NFL Draft, Dawkins spent 16 seasons in the NFL — 13 with the Philadelphia Eagles and three for Denver.
During his career, Dawkins earned First-Team All-Pro honors five times and was selected to the Pro Bowl nine times, including twice with the Broncos.
He was also the first player in NFL history to record a sack, interception, fumble recovery, and touchdown catch in a single game — in 2002, against the Houston Texans.
A member of the NFL’s 2000s All-Decade, Dawkins finished his career with 37 interceptions, 36 forced fumbles, 19 fumble recoveries, 26 sacks, 895 tackles, and 3 defensive touchdowns.
Along with this year, Lynch was also among the finalist group in 2017 but fell short of the requisite 80 percent of the votes to be elected.
Boulder’s own Tony Boselli also fell short this year, his second-consecutive year as a finalist, in his 12th year of eligibility.
