Schlereth on Broncos quarterback situation: ‘Why not Brock?’

Dec 20, 2017, 12:00 AM | Updated: 9:10 am

Brock Osweiler’s performance in a come-from-behind win for the Denver Broncos on Thursday in Indianapolis could have been a “flash in the pan,” said Mark Schlereth.

It could have been that “nobody was ready for Brock,” the “Schlereth & Evans” co-host said. Or that it’s just it’s “street football” on Thursday night game because nobody’s been able to put in the work.

But …

“I saw a guy that threw the ball differently than I’ve ever seen him throw it before, and I’d like to see two more games of it,” Schlereth said on Tuesday.

Schlereth said that if Osweiler — who went 12-of-17 for 194 yards, two passing touchdowns and one rushing touchdown, and had a quarterback rating of 147.7 in relief of an injured Trevor Siemian — could be a guy the Broncos can reliably start, then “why not Brock?”

“If that’s a guy that has been fixed and that’s a guy can operate in (offensive coordinator) Bill Musgrave’s system and the football rehab has ‘taken,’ why wouldn’t you want to see if Brock could repeat that performance from Thursday night for the next two weeks?” Schlereth said.

Osweiler, Schlereth said, is someone the Broncos offered to pay $16 million just two seasons ago to be the quarterback of the team’s future — significantly less than what the team could manage with its options at the position this offseason.

“He’s going to cost you a hell of a lot less than trying to go out and get Kirk Cousins or trying to go out and get Alex Smith, who’s not a free agent, or trying to go out and get Case Keenum, who’s going to cost you a boatload of money,” Schlereth said.

As of Tuesday, it’s still unknown who’ll be under center for the Broncos on Sunday on the road taking on the Washington Redskins, Osweiler or 2016 first-round pick Paxton Lynch.
