Klis: Broncos could wait on Romo until camp if Lynch not ready

It’s been nearly a fortnight since reports that the Dallas Cowboys would release Tony Romo at the start of free agency, paving the way for the veteran quarterback to get scooped up by either the Denver Broncos or Houston Texans.
Two weeks later, though, Romo remains on the Cowboys roster, and he could possibly stay there for a while.
Or, at least Denver might be inclined to wait a while for his release, 9News Broncos Insider Mike Klis told 104.3 The Fan’s Brandon Stokley on Tuesday.
Klis said there’s likely two deadlines after which the Broncos would move on from the Romo saga and turn toward next season: the NFL Draft and possibly OTAs.
“It’s probably the draft,” Klis said. “That’s when they gave up on Kaepernick last year. It was Monday before the draft, and then they set their sights on going to get Paxton Lynch.”
But should Lynch fail to impress enough during offeason workout in the months following the draft, Romo interest could remain alive at UCHealth Training Center until players start arriving there for training camp.
“If Paxton Lynch looks like he’s made improvements by leaps and bounds, then I think the Broncos might stick with (Trevor) Siemian and Lynch,” Klis said. “If it looks like Lynch, as they suspect right now, needs another year, then I think they might be able to go all the way to training camp in keeping Tony Romo alive.”
Lynch is looking to improve on an inconsistent, at best, rookie campaign in which he played in three games, starting two and coming off the bench for an injured Siemian in another.
The first-round draft pick in 2016 passed for 497 yards on 49 completions, 2 touchdowns and 1 interception.
The NFL Draft kicks off from Philadelphia on April 27 while training camp will likely start toward the end of July or first week in August.
