Sanders: Wasn’t throwing Broncos QBs ‘under the bus’ with Romo quote

Denver Broncos wide receiver Emmanuel Sanders said his recent comments about Dallas Cowboys quarterback Tony Romo were not meant to disparage the quarterbacks currently on his team’s roster but were just an honest assessment of the skilled veteran.
“Schlereth and Evans” co-host Mike Evans, in Houston for Super Bowl 51, caught up with Sanders on Tuesday at the NFL Experience, wherein the pass catcher said he did not intend to insult teammates Trevor Siemian or Paxton Lynch with his comments to NFL Network’s “GameDay Morning” earlier this month.
“Of course, I’m going to give an honest answer. The question was, ‘Will Tony Romo help us win a championship?’ Why would I say no?” Sanders asked. “I feel like anybody who’s willing and capable of coming in and sticking his hands in the pot and help us win a world championship, I’m always going to say, ‘Yeah, bring those guys in. I just felt like Tony Romo is one of those guys.”
“I wasn’t throwing our quarterbacks under the bus.”
Sanders said on the NFL Network broadcast that he’d “benefit” from the Broncos acquiring Romo, who’s been reportedly interested in landing in Denver after losing his starting role with the Cowboys to rookie Dak Prescott this season.
Was asked about #Cowboys’ plans for Tony Romo in 2017. No secret, #Broncos are his No. 1 spot. I’m told DEN is not inclined to trade for him

“If he does bring him over, I think Tony Romo will fit good in (offensive coordinator Mike) McCoy’s system. It’s a no-huddle, up-tempo offense. I think that it’s going to be similar to the Cowboys,” Sanders said. “I think he has Demaryius Thomas and some receiver No. 10 on the other side. I feel like we will win ballgames with Tony Romo or potentially a championship.”
Sanders did say in the interview that both Siemian and Lynch could be successful in this Denver offense, and echoed those comments with Evans on Tuesday.
“I mean, Trevor Siemian, he got a Pro Bowl nod. He had to turn it down, obviously, because he was hurt. Paxton Lynch, what he does and what he did in college and just all of the intangibles that he has. He has the potential to be great,” Sanders said. “So regardless if Romo comes or not, we’ve got great quarterbacks.”
Any scenario in which Romo ends up in Denver likely hinges on if the Cowboys intend to trade the veteran quarterback or release him.
Mike Klis, 9News Broncos Insider, reported late last week that should Romo be granted a full release by Dallas, Denver could have interest in his services. However, should the Cowboys hold out for a trade partner it could spoil Romo’s wish to play for the Broncos next season.
