Avalanche make history in New York, set unique NHL road record

The Colorado Avalanche made a special kind of history on Tuesday night in New York.

The team won their 15th straight regular-season road game when they beat the Islanders by a final score of 7-4. That’s an NHL record, breaking a mark set by the Buffalo Sabres back in 2006. That one spanned from April to November, as the record is allowed to occur over two seasons.

Colorado won three in a row to start the 2023-24 campaign, after closing with 11 straight road wins to end last regular season. They fell once in Seattle in the playoffs, but again, this a regular season record.

And to get it done, they had to light the scoreboard early and often. Ryan Johansen, Cale Makar, Bowen Byram and Nathan MacKinnon all found the back of the net to give the Avs a 4-3 lead after two periods. In the third, Mikko Rantanen played hero to give Colorado the victory after New York tied things up, 4-4.

Johansen and Ross Colton added insurance tallies late, and the Avalanche are now 6-0-0 on the year, good for a perfect 12 points. They look every bit like a Stanley Cup contender once again, after winning the trophy in 2022 and then suffering a disappointing Round 1 exit last spring.

And they’ll get to keep trying to extend their streak on the road, with contests at Pittsburgh and Buffalo coming up before returning home to face St. Louis.
