Report: Payton wants several former assistants with Saints for Broncos staff

The staff for new Broncos head coach Sean Payton could be coming into focus.
Payton will interview Seahawks assistant and longtime Bears coach Sean Desai for the defensive coordinator position today. He looks like a pretty sure bet for the job, given that Brian Flores is taking the DC role in Minnesota. We haven’t heard of any other candidates for that role.
On Tuesday morning, Jeff Duncan of Nola.com reported several other assistants that could possibly fill out Payton’s staff, including a couple of names we hadn’t yet heard. Not surprisingly, the list is full of former Saints.
Duncan says Payton plans to interview New Orleans QB coach Ronald Curry for Denver’s offensive coordinator position. Curry coached the Saints’ QBs the last two seasons, as well as held the title of passing game coordinator in 2022. Duncan says Curry is considered “one of the top you offensive assistants in the league,” and also notes he had an interview to be Tampa Bay’s OC earlier this offseason.
Duncan is also reporting Payton will try to hire longtime Saints assistant Kevin Petry, who’s been on the football operations staff the last six seasons. Payton is also considering Declan Doyle to be Denver’s tight ends coach and still trying to court Zach Strief to be the Broncos offensive line coach. NFL Network’s Ian Rapoport said on Monday he expects that to happen.
Kris Richard and Dan Roushar and are also candidates to join Payton in Denver after the Saints parted ways with both of them this offseason. Duncan reports Payton has “expressed interest” in the two coaches.
