Clayton: How intriguing can this Broncos offseason get?

Jan 24, 2022, 6:10 PM

More doors are opening for the Denver Broncos at the beginning of the offseason.

First, the coaching search has moved along quickly. Their list of 10 candidates is now down to three. They have Dan Quinn of the Dallas Cowboys, Nathaniel Hackett of the Green Bay Packers and Kevin O’Connell of the Los Angeles Rams. Quinn is a little delayed. He is finishing up his last of five interviews, but he could be up for a second interview if it is needed Tuesday or Wednesday. You have six groups being put together for the sale of the team.

The newest door is the possibility of getting Aaron Rodgers in a trade. Rodgers is trying to decide if he wants to stay in Green Bay, retire or ask for a trade. Saturday’s stunning loss to San Francisco certainly has to have him thinking of leaving. Instead of going to the NFC title game, the Packers are out and have a lot of issues. They are in one of the worst cap situations in the league, being about $40 million over the cap.

Rodgers said he doesn’t want to go through a rebuilding process, and that’s what might happen in Green Bay because of the cap. They are going to lose more players than they gain.

What will it cost to get him? The Denver Post came up with some interesting ideas. The Post thought the Broncos could offer a No. 1 pick in 2022, a No. 2 in 2023 that could upgrade to a No. 1, wide receiver Jerry Jeudy and a couple of defensive starters. That makes sense. The market for quarterbacks could also help the Broncos. The Philadelphia Eagles are staying with Jalen Hurts. The Indianapolis Colts could stay with Carson Wentz. The New Orleans Saints could lose Sean Payton at head coach and are in the league’s worst cap situation.

Can it get more interesting?
