Clayton: Disaster against the Chargers means change for the Broncos

What a disaster for the Broncos.

You knew things were going to be bad because of the 15 or so players missing because of COVID-19, but the Broncos weren’t even competitive against the Chargers. Sure, they weren’t at home and that made things tougher. But the Broncos were blown out by the Chargers, 34-13.

Nothing went right. Once again, Drew Lock didn’t get the ball to the wide receivers. Courtland Sutton only ended up catching three passes for 60 yards. They ended up with only 83 yards rushing. It wasn’t close.

So now, the Broncos have officially been eliminated from the playoffs. That means changes are coming.

It most likely means Vic Fangio is out after next week. There will likely be an ownership change. This is an attractive job because of the talent base, what George Paton has done and the fan base. But there will be change.

The defense gave up 237 yards passing. They gave up 104 yards on the ground. Those aren’t bad numbers, but the 34 points were a killer.

Fangio has to figure out what he wants to do in the season finale. For the Broncos, it’s a meaningless game except for guys trying to add to their resume.

The Broncos needed a much better performance and didn’t get it. So the season is over for the Broncos and now the thoughts go to next year.
