It’s a “joke” for Fangio to claim this Broncos QB battle is still 50/50

The Denver Broncos had their first preseason against the Minnesota Vikings this past weekend. Both Drew Lock and Teddy Bridgewater looked good, and this Broncos offense actually had a spark.

Rookie cornerback Pat Surtain II and the defense were locked in and dominated the Vikings offense. Though it was only a preseason game, there was a lot to be excited for.

With that being said, head coach Vic Fangio refuses to give Lock praise and even went so far as to say, “I don’t think any separation happened today in this game,” after the young quarterback went 5-of-7 for 151 yards and two touchdowns.

Does Fangio need to crown Lock the starter? He actually should, but he could at least acknowledge that separation has been created. His refusal to praise his young quarterback makes it seem like he has wanted Bridgewater as his starter all along. Lock went out there and played as well as possible, and for Fangio to claim it’s still 50/50 is a joke.

If Bridgewater wins this “QB battle,” then it was all for show. He has more turnovers in camp and got outshined by Lock against the Vikings. If this is a 50/50 battle, Fangio needs to tell us who is winning that battle, but he refuses to give Lock praise when he plays lights out. When Fangio was asked about Lock’s performance, he couldn’t help himself to bring up Bridgewater during his answer.

It’s understandable that coaches don’t want to “give the game away,” but Fangio has routinely done this when it comes to Lock, especially with this quarterback competition. Besides his clear disinterest in the Broncos offense in general, he never gives Lock credit, even though he has thrown less interceptions than Bridgewater has during this competition. And Bridgewater is supposed to be the “safe” option.

Overall, this quarterback battle is a waste of time, especially when the head coach doesn’t care about it or give actual updates. Eventually, the Broncos will have to make a decision, so they might as well go with the young guy and keep Bridgewater as the perfect back up.
