Fangio can’t just focus on one side of the ball

Vic Fangio is entering year three of being the Denver Broncos head coach. Obviously, his defensive coaching history is what landed him the head job in the first place. The league is getting younger and more offensively driven when it comes to head coaches, but the defensive-minded head coach has not gone extinct.

With that said, Fangio’s lack of interest in the Broncos offense is alarming.

A head coach is the manager of the entire team. You cannot solely focus on one aspect of the game. Fangio clearly only shows interest in the defense during practice, and at times seems totally comfortable leaving the offense in the hands of coordinator Pat Shurmur.

I don’t expect Fangio to be an offensive guru like Mike Shanahan, but to completely ignore the offensive side of the ball at practice doesn’t set up for being a great game manager come the regular season.

We all know Fangio is a defensive-based coach, but he can’t leave the offense in the hands of his coordinator and expect to consistently win in this league. During post practice press conferences, he often defers to needing to “watch the tape” when asked about the offense.

It’s clear as day when out at camp that Fangio is preoccupied with the defense. But he’s not a defensive coordinator anymore. He’s a head coach, and part of being a head coach is operating all three aspects of the game.

If Fangio wants to be a winning head coach in the NFL, he cannot only focus on one side of the ball.
