Author’s note: Covering the NFL since 2003, I’ve been able to generate contacts with every team in the league. This is the time of year when those relationships come in handy.
NFL teams have entered the offseason mode, and information is swirling around the atmosphere of the league. If you know who to ask, you can learn some interesting things about the direction of these franchises as they prepare for the 2017 season.
Here’s some of the latest buzz I’m hearing from around the NFL and Super Bowl 51.
DeMarcus Ware back to Dallas?
The Denver Broncos were able to get some great games out of future Hall of Fame pass rusher DeMarcus Ware. He signed as a free agent in 2014, and Ware was a huge contributor for the team’s Super Bowl 50 championship team.
His three-year deal is now done, and Ware has insisted that he’s not done playing football. Ware had back surgery this year, and it’s going to be some time before he’s able to practice again.
A team that might have interest in Ware is his former team, the Dallas Cowboys.
Buzz: Sources told me that this is a real possibility. Ware may not be signed until we get closer to training camp, but he showed last year that his tank is not empty.
He’ll have to have his snaps monitored no matter where he lands, but in a part-time role, Ware can still be an effective pass rusher.
Sources tell me that Denver and Dallas may be the only two places he would want to play in 2017.
Gary Kubiak plans his future
Former Denver Broncos head coach Gary Kubiak was making his way around radio row on Wednesday. In a bonus segment on PFT Live, Kubiak explained some of his plans for the future.
“I’m trying to figure things out. I made a commitment that I would take a good break here before I made any decisions.” Kubiak said.
He did insist that his next job would not be in coaching, but that may not be the case.
Buzz: Sources say they would not be surprised to see Kubiak coaching in the NFL in a few years. The right deal would have to come along — he might only want to return as an offensive coordinator — but many think Kubiak’s coaching days are not over.
A quarterback option for the 49ers
The 2017 NFL draft doesn’t have a strong draft class, so the San Francisco 49ers may not have its quarterback of the future on the roster this season. However, sources tell me they could go after Mike Glennon in free agency.
As a rookie with the Buccaneers in 2013, Glennon played in 13 games, passing for 19 touchdowns and only 9 interceptions.
He’s hitting free agency after backing up Jameis Winston the past two years, and Glennon’s price tag will not be outlandish.
Buzz: Glennon could get to prove himself as a potential starter for the 49ers. With John Lynch as general manager and Kyle Shanahan as the head coach-to-be, the 49ers have a bright future.
Shanahan should get a six-year deal, just like Lynch. One league source told me, “You know what that means? It means they’ll have time to find the right quarterback. There won’t be a rush to make a desperate move because they have six years.”
