Author’s note: Covering the NFL since 2003, I’ve been able to generate contacts with every team in the league. This is the time of year when those relationships come in handy.
NFL teams have entered the offseason mode, and information is swirling around the atmosphere of the league. If you know who to ask, you can learn some interesting things about the direction of these franchises as they prepare for the 2017 season.
Here’s some of the latest buzz I’m hearing from around the NFL and Super Bowl 51.
Denver Broncos and Tony Romo
Mike Klis, 9 News Broncos insider, reported that the Broncos could be interested in adding quarterback Tony Romo if the Cowboys release him.
Buzz: Teams around the league are hesitant to trade for Romo. Most people I talk to believe the Cowboys are going to be forced to cut the veteran quarterback. That means the interest from the Broncos could be quite serious in the case of those events unfolding.
Houston Texans quarterback situation
There’s no denying that Brock Osweiler failed to impress in his first season with the Houston Texans. He was benched for Tom Savage toward the end of the regular season, then when Savage was hurt Osweiler came back in and beat a decimated Raiders team in the playoffs.
Even with that postseason victory, the team is not going to waste any time finding a new quarterback from the sources I talk to.
Buzz: The Texans are interested in selecting a quarterback in the 2017 NFL draft. In fact, because of the fifth-year option they may select Patrick Mahomes (Texas Tech) in the first round.
John Lynch assembling a staff
In a surprise move, the San Francisco 49ers hired former Broncos safety John Lynch as their general manager. Lynch has no experience running a team, but he’s going to add people around him that have plenty of experience.
Reports indicate former Tampa Bay Buccaneers executive Mark Dominick could join Lynch’s staff in San Francisco. However, that’s only one move Lynch could make putting together his staff.
Buzz: Part of Lynch’s plans include luring away Broncos director of college scouting Adam Peters.
Team sources tell me that Peters is a favorite of general manager John Elway. Peters has been described as a person Elway can lean on, and losing him would certainly sting.
